According to this legend, just after the recapture of the island by the Christian troops of the king Alfonso the III, The Liberal, a young Saracen called Xoroi managed to avoid being captured and sold as a slave. After wandering for some time, trying to find a place of refuge he finally got to a cave on a cliff in the southern coast, near Cala’n Porter. The cave was located in an inaccessible place at great height above the sea.
Xoroi abducted, or simply seduced (we have heard both versions) a girl who lived nearby and together formed a family. The girl’s parents, and her whole family, never stopped looking for her, so that one day after a heavy snowstorm they found foot prints that lead to the couple hiding place. There they cornered Xoroi, who preferred to jump off the cliff top and plummet to his death instead of surrendering and loosing his freedom. Witnessing such a tragedy his elder son followed his father’s steps and also threw himself to the sea.
Even today the cave is still a tribute to Xoroi and his longing for liberty, although such a sanctuary has adapted itself to the demands of modern life. Now it’s one of the hottest spots of night life in Minorca with unforgettable parties and the best music of the moment, in a truly awesome environment.
