El Toro which is 357 meters high, is the highest point in Menorca. There is no need to state that such a figure is not relevant enough to be ranked among the main mountains of the Mediterranean area. Nevertheless, at least surpasses the Eiffel Tower by 24 meters. That’s something!
Regardless of its height, El Toro is an extraordinary viewpoint, with the most astounding views of the whole island, from north to south and east to west. Actually, if the weather is fine enough (which is not that uncommon!) you can see the Tramontana mountain range, at the north of Majorca. But El Toro is much more than that. It is also the spiritual centre of the island. At its top, one can find the Sanctuary of Our Lady of El Toro, the patron saint of the island. According to tradition in that spot Our Lady appeared to a group of friars, who had been guided there by a bull (“toro” both in Spanish and Catalan). When you enter the sanctuary, in one of the small chapels in the right hand side, you can see some archaeological remains related to such a tradition.
