On of the best know stories about illustrious visitors to Menorca is that of Lord Horace Nelson and his lover, Lady Emma Hamilton. The popular imagination often locates the couple in Port Mahon were the lovers would keep their relationships behind Sir William Hamilton’s back. Furthermore, it is usually believed that the lovers’ nest was an impressive manor, close to the harbour, known as Sant Antoni, or the Golden Farm.
On the other hand, many serious scholars state that Lord Nelson was only at Mahon in one occasion and that the illustrious Lady didn’t come along with him. Furthermore, they also affirm that Nelson, by the time, was in a very bad shape because of the many battles he had fought. His many injuries had resulted in a lost arm and missing eye. Broken teeth, and all kind of scars, covering his whole body, completed his glorious collection. Therefore, at least apparently, the old chap wasn’t in his best for love making.
Regardless of this alternative version, what appears to be an incontestable truth is that Lord Nelson, Lady Hamilton and Sir Hamilton lived together openly in Sir Hamilton’s house. Later on Lady Hamilton (namely, Emma) gave birth to a girl who was Christianized under the significant name of Horatia. Once again we hope that everyone would unleash her or his intuition and imagination.
