Culture, nature, landscapes, sea, history, gastronomy ... if you like all this, you will love this route through these three incredible Asturias places.

This noble town that overlooks the Cantabrian Sea is one of the most beautiful coastal Asturias towns. It gives off that marine charm that only a small selection of places in Asturias already conserve, that's why it's a must to stop on this route… but what to do when you arrive?

Tour of the Paseo de San Pedro

Paseo San Pedro

Built in the 19th century, this beautiful promenade has always stood out for its incomparable views of the coast and the mountains. It's the perfect balcony to discover the beauty of the cliffs, the Cantabrian Sea, the boats that cross the harbor ... In addition, the whole path is grass, so if you feel like it, you can go barefoot.

Visit to the port

The port of Llanes is the typical Asturian fishing port, where many old-style boats are still moored. It is the maximum exponent of the maritime character of this town that has always been linked to fishing.

Visit to the Cubes of Memory

cubes of memory

On the jetty of the port, you will find the Cubes of the Memory of Agustín Ibarrola. The large pieces of concrete were decorated by the artist to reflect his own experiences, the history of art and also of the territory. They are mixed with harmony, creating volumes and a beautiful mantle of colors. It is, undoubtedly, one of the most surprising places of Asturias.

Walk through the Old Town

Finally, go to the Old Town, declared Historic-Artistic and of Cultural Interest. Many of the buildings that you will find in this beautiful walk are medieval and it is surprising that, despite the years, they stay really well preserved. Don´t miss the 13th century wall, the Puertas de la Villa, the defense tower, the Basilica of Santa María del Conceyu or the Gastañaga Palace.

Continue your route through these charming towns of Asturias and head for Ribadesella, just half an hour by car from Llanes. You will arrive at the capital of canoeing; as this town is famous for the canoeing descent of the Sella river that is celebrated every year in summer. Hundreds of people descend by canoe down the river and celebrate a great party.

Tour of the Santa Marina promenade

If, at the moment, you do feel like making the descent, we recommend you to start exploring Ribadesella by its promenade. It runs between old mansions and villas overlooking the sea that migrants built at their return. At the western end of the beach, traces of dinosaur footprints have been found so if you feel like it you can also go check them out.

Visit to the Cave of Tito Bustillo

Another place in Asturias that you have to see is the Tito Bustillo Cave, declared a World Heritage Site for its extraordinary representations of Paleolithic Art. It was discovered in 1968 by two young locals. The treasure of Tito Bustillo is composed of twelve holes distributed throughout the cavity, about 700 meters long with attached galleries, which are more than 25,000 years old. Paintings, engravings of signs, animals, anthropomorphic representations ... an almost unique collection in the world. It is important to note that the cave can only be visited during certain periods and it is necessary to book the entrance in advance. Otherwise, it is also possible to see the Rupestrian Art Center.

Lunch at El Texu Restaurant

Is your appetite widening? If lunch time has already arrived, head to El Texu Restaurant to try the real Asturian gastronomy. Ask for their famous huge cachopos and accompany them with typical Tortos. You'll love it!

Villaviciosa is one of the richest towns in Asturias and the one most closely linked to cider. Its fertile land, irrigated by the largest estuary in Asturias, is the paradise of llagares (places where cider is made) and chigres (where it is drunk). So much so that every year the Apple Festival is celebrated here, a festival declared of Regional Tourist Interest.

Walk through the estuary of Villaviciosa

To help digesting the food, we suggest you take a nice walk through the estuary of Villaviciosa, which, as we said, is the largest in Asturias. It is one of the best preserved estuaries and the one with the highest environmental value of all the Cantabrian coast, which is why it is also a protected area. You can enjoy the beaches, the dunes, the cliffs and all its fauna.

 Tour around the Old Town

Continue the walk through the Old Town of Villaviciosa and get lost in its cobblestone streets, watch the manor houses and the beautiful church of Santa María de la Oliva. Dedicate yourself to walk, without direction, and allow your mind to travel to medieval times.

Visit to Valdediós Monastery

Finally, do not miss the Monastery of Santa María de Valdediós just 8 kilometers from the town center. It's a beautiful Carmelite monastery nestled in a lush and green valley that was baptized by the monks with the name of Valdediós or "Valley of God".

Visit to the cellar of Sidra el Gaiteiro

Another of the great attractions of Villaviciosa is the visit to the famous Sidra el Gaiteiro winery, a one-hour tour to understand how that product is made and the tradition and constructions around it. And all this, in addition, culminated with a tasting. Admission is free and reservations are recommended.

If at the end of this route you still want more, go back to Villaviciosa and end the tour with some sidrinas at Sidrería Lena. But just a couple!
