Do you want to discover the capital of Menorca as a local? Follow these recommendations that combine essential places and other more secret that only a few know.

In one of Menorca's corners, Mahón is placed. The city, also known as Maó or “Mo” by the locals, is built around the second largest natural harbor in the Mediterranean, and is full of charm and history. If you want to know what to do in Mahón don't miss this list with the essential places and some secrets that only Menorcans know about.

1. The port of Mahón

The port of Mahón

As we anticipated, the port of Mahón is the second largest natural port in the Mediterranean, forming a gap of more than 6 kilometers that enters the land and allows the passage of ships safely. This is why, historically, it has been a key stop on trade routes.

It's very nice to walk through it and, even if you feel like it, run along it. Along the way you will find many bars, restaurants, clothing stores, ice cream parlors ... as well as King's Island.

We also recommend you visit the famous island of Lazareto and the military fortress of Sa Mola that are in the port. Both tell part of the history of the city and the island, although you will have to jump on a boat to see them.

One recommendation: visit it at sunset.

2. Mercat des Claustre

Menorcan cuisine is one of the island's main attractions. To enjoy it and try different local products, such as the delicious Mahon cheese, you can visit the Mercat des Claustre. You will find different stores with local local food, clothing, handcrafts ... Inside you will find the Cloister of Carmen that is part of the Church of Carmen. In addition, live music concerts are organized there on summer evenings.

3. Plaza de España and the Fish Market

Fish Market

Other thing to do in Mahón is taking a walk to Plaza de España where the Fish Market is located. Inside the building you will find stalls where you can buy fresh fish and some bars where you can have a drink at noon. In summer its atmosphere is great both by day and night; and in winter it becomes the meeting point for locals who want to have a snack during the weekend.

4. Gin Xoriguer

Have you tried Menorca´s famous gin? Visit the factory of Gin Xoriguer, the typical gin of the island with which the Pomada is made. During the activity you will discover its history, how it was manufactured and, if you wish, you can take some home with you.
